Realtek Sound Manager - WTF?

My current work computer has one of those crappy OEM Realtek Sound Manager craplet pieces of software.

I really hate it when hardware companies (especially sound card manufacturers) think that they should abandon the well-known and incredibly standard windows framed interface and invent their own scary window interface.

Anyway, I normally would never open this app, but it forces itself in focus when I plug in my headphones.  (Yes, you read that correctly)

Umm, WTF?  It obviously knows what I plugged in because it is highlighted and checked.  The headphones don’t work until I click OK on this box.

The worst part?  Uninstalling the application renders the sound card useless.  Pfft.

It is "features" like this that make me think that Linux is a better choice sometimes.

Boot an Ubuntu live cd. I'll bet your sound, including headphones will work just fine.

I share your frustration in the Windows world. Hopefully driver signing in Vista will help and MS will refuse to sign such horrible drivers.

Funny you say that. I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. A lot of things don't work right out of the box, including sound.

I tinkered with it most of the morning and it's functioning reasonably well, but I'm not convinced I could switch so easily.

I have faced the same problem. I had that piece of software. But I have changed my hardware. Lucky I'm :).
Ben, Did you not found any settings where you can disable those notification??
I can disable those notification with new software (driver).
